FURIA are one series away from defending their Thunderpick World Championship title. The majority-Brazilian side beat Aurora Gaming 2-0 in the first semi-final at BLAST Arena Studios in Malta on 17 October, winning Dust2 13-8 and Inferno 13-10, and will play for the trophy and the $500,000 first prize on 18 October.
The win also settles a score. The two teams met at the previous tier-one event, ESL Pro League Season 24, and Aurora won that series on their way to a third-place finish that included a victory over Team Spirit in the bronze decider. In Malta, FURIA turned the matchup around.
How the semi-final was won
According to HLTV’s match report, FURIA came in with a different approach to the map veto and it paid off immediately. On Dust2, Aurora’s economy never stabilised and FURIA closed the map 13-8 without a serious comeback attempt.
Inferno was closer. A force-buy round opened the map and FURIA’s T side won it, building a 4-1 lead. The teams then traded rounds around the A bombsite before FURIA switched their attention to B, where YEKINDAR’s entries won two rounds in a row. A late pivot back to A caught Aurora flat-footed and FURIA took the half 8-4.
The second half began with another force-buy fight that again went FURIA’s way for a 10-6 lead. Aurora then found their best spell of the series: a Jimpphat clutch helped them close the gap and briefly turn the momentum. In the decisive round, however, Aurora walked into a pistol-round stack on the B bombsite, and FURIA closed the map 13-10 and the series 2-0.
Series statistics
HLTV credits FURIA’s repeated success in low-buy rounds and their superior individual firepower. Kaike “KSCERATO” Cerato was the standout player of the series, and FalleN told HLTV during the event that a single tournament win can do a lot for a team’s momentum. The key numbers from HLTV’s scoreboard across both maps:
| Player | Team | K-D | ADR | KAST | Rating 3.0 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| KSCERATO | FURIA | 38-22 | 91.3 | 70.5% | 1.67 |
| YEKINDAR | FURIA | 30-24 | 81.9 | 84.1% | 1.39 |
| molodoy | FURIA | 31-28 | 77.1 | 70.5% | 1.17 |
| Wicadia | Aurora | 30-33 | 77.6 | 65.9% | 0.94 |
| Jimpphat | Aurora | 29-29 | 68.7 | 70.5% | 0.92 |
| XANTARES | Aurora | 23-30 | 63.5 | 68.2% | 0.86 |
Every FURIA starter finished with a rating of 0.96 or better, while no Aurora player reached 1.00. Damjan “kyxsan” Stoilkovski ended the series 19-31 with a 0.70 rating.
The road to Malta: group stage results
The Thunderpick World Championship 2026 runs from 14 to 18 October with eight teams, seven of them invited on the basis of their Valve Regional Standings. Virtus.pro earned a place through the global qualifier but could not attend because of visa issues, and Ninjas in Pyjamas took their spot, esports.gg reports. The teams were split into two four-team double-elimination groups, with two wins needed to advance and two losses meaning elimination.
| Group | Team | Record |
|---|---|---|
| A | Team Falcons | 2-0 |
| A | Aurora Gaming | 2-1 |
| A | 9z Team | 1-2 |
| A | Ninjas in Pyjamas | 0-2 |
| B | FURIA | 2-0 |
| B | BetBoom Team | 2-1 |
| B | Legacy | 1-2 |
| B | PARIVISION | 0-2 |
FURIA’s group run was clean on paper but not without scares. They opened with a 2-0 win over BetBoom Team (13-10 on Ancient, 13-9 on Mirage) and then dropped Cache 10-13 to Legacy before winning Inferno 13-5 and Dust2 13-8 to take the first playoff place in Group B.
Aurora’s route was harder. They lost their opener 0-2 to 9z Team, then beat Ninjas in Pyjamas 2-0 in the elimination match and gained revenge on 9z in the decider, winning Cache 13-11 and Inferno 13-4. Falcons topped Group A after an overtime win on Ancient against NiP and a three-map series against 9z.
The other semi-final
The second semi-final, Team Falcons against BetBoom Team, was still being played when this report was filed. Falcons took Anubis 13-5 before BetBoom levelled the series with a 16-14 overtime win on Dust2, sending the match to Mirage. BetBoom were the surprise package of Group B, eliminating PARIVISION and Legacy to reach the playoffs.
What is at stake on Sunday
The playoff day on 18 October includes the grand final and a third-place match. Prize money is significant for an autumn event of this size: according to esports.gg, the winner receives $500,000, the runner-up $250,000, third place $100,000 and fourth $50,000. Legacy and 9z Team leave with $30,000 each for fifth to sixth place, while PARIVISION and Ninjas in Pyjamas take $20,000 each.
| Placement | Prize money (per esports.gg) |
|---|---|
| 1st | $500,000 |
| 2nd | $250,000 |
| 3rd | $100,000 |
| 4th | $50,000 |
| 5th-6th | $30,000 |
| 7th-8th | $20,000 |
For FURIA, ranked fourth in HLTV’s world ranking of 12 October (Aurora are sixth), a successful title defence would be a valuable boost before the next big date on the calendar. FURIA have recently struggled in matches against the very top teams, losing to MOUZ at ESL Pro League Season 24, so beating Aurora and then either Falcons or BetBoom would ease some of those doubts.
What comes next
There is very little rest. PGL Masters Bucharest 2026 runs from 24 to 31 October and brings back the teams that skipped Malta, including Vitality, Team Spirit and MOUZ.
EsportsSignal will update this story after the grand final. Until then, the scores above are taken from HLTV’s report and the esports.gg results hub; check the official Thunderpick broadcast on YouTube and Twitch for live updates.
