How the 1v1 scene is structured
StarCraft II remains a 1v1 RTS circuit even when a URL slug still says “Wings of Liberty.” The live competitive client is StarCraft II with the current balance patch — Legacy of the Void as the expansion layer — unless an exhibition explicitly runs an older campaign module. Treat the Wings of Liberty slug as a catalog name, not as proof that players are on the 2010 campaign ruleset.
The Korean GSL (when it runs), other regional cups, and mixed-title events such as Esports World Cup (when SC2 is included) are the practical calendar. There is no franchise league with 12 standing team houses in the CDL sense. Players are the unit; teams are sponsors and practice partners. A “team match” in SC2 is often a show format, not the default.
Series are Bo3, Bo5, or Bo7 with a map veto. Race (Terran, Zerg, Protoss) and the map pool are the match. Random race is rare at the top and should be called out if it appears. Worker counts, timings, and build orders are patch-specific.
What to verify on an official match page
Use GSL, EWC, or the cup’s own page. Check:
- Best-of. Ro32 can be Bo3 while ro8 is Bo5 and a final Bo7. A 2–0 is finished or not depending on that round.
- Map pool and veto. The season pool is a list. If the match page still shows a rotated-out map, trust the season PDF.
- Patch. Balance updates change unit stats. A GSL round can freeze. Your ladder patch may be newer.
- Region / studio. Seoul studios versus an EWC LAN in another country. Online cups should name the server (often Amsterdam, KR, or similar). Record the label; do not invent ping.
Replays are first-class evidence in SC2. If you cite a timing, you should be able to point at a replay or a named analyst’s timestamp. This hub does not invent 14-minute push clocks.
Reading race matchups without folklore
TvZ, ZvP, and PvT have decades of folklore. Folklore is not the patch. If a preview says “Protoss is unplayable,” demand the patch number and a sample of series from the current pool. Small samples (six maps) do not prove a race is dead. See also our news note on small samples when it is live.
The campaign names (Wings of Liberty, Heart of the Swarm, Legacy of the Void) describe PvE products. Competitive 1v1 uses the multiplayer balance. Do not preview a GSL match with campaign mission mechanics.
Client name, map pool, and sample size
Write “current multiplayer patch” on every GSL or EWC note so the Wings of Liberty catalog slug cannot trick you into campaign rules. Then write the season map pool and the best-of for that round. Ro32 Bo3 and a final Bo7 are different series. A 2–0 is only a win if the round’s best-of says so.
Race matchup folklore is not a patch. If you want to say a race is weak, you need the patch number and more than one Bo3. Six maps is a story about two players, not about Protoss. Point at a replay or a named analyst timestamp for timings; this hub will not invent a 14-minute push.
Studio matches in Seoul and arena matches at a mixed-title LAN differ in machines, crowd, and online vs on-site. Name the environment. Team-league exhibitions exist; they are not the default 1v1 product. Keep those formats in separate notes.
If the cup PDF and the broadcast disagree on the map pool, the PDF wins until the organizer corrects it. Random race, if it ever appears, should be labelled in the first line. Do not preview a GSL match with campaign mission mechanics from Wings of Liberty, Heart of the Swarm, or Legacy of the Void PvE. Those are different products that share a store page.
This hub does not sell a VPN. Match intel stays on /matches/. If you still want one cashier after the reading guide, open the GG.BET partner check. No operator hop on this page.

Cons / limitations
- Slug vs client. A “Wings of Liberty” URL does not mean the 2010 ruleset. Confirm the live multiplayer patch.
- Tiny map samples. Three maps in a Bo3 cannot carry a race-wide conclusion.
- Studio online vs arena LAN. A GSL Code S studio match is not an EWC arena match in crowd or machine setup. Name the environment.
