How the competitive map is drawn
League of Legends esports is a set of regional leagues (LCK, LPL, LEC, LCS or its current Americas form, plus smaller regions and a Challengers/academy layer) feeding international events: MSI, Worlds, and occasional invitationals such as a Tier-2 global cup. Franchising, promotion/relegation, and partner-team lists are region-specific. Do not describe LCK as if it used LCS rules. The official league site for that region is the format source.
A series is almost always a Bo3 in groups or a Bo5 in knockouts, with Bo1 still used in some group stages. Side selection (blue/red) is a real strategic resource: blue often speaks first in draft. Patch number is the other half of the match. A Worlds patch is often frozen; a regular-season week may ride the live competitive patch. Those are different games for draft purposes.
Fearless draft and other experimental formats appear in some 2020s events. If the match page says Fearless, a champion used in game one may be unavailable later in the series. That is not a bug. Write it down before you complain about a “shallow pool.”
What to verify on an official match page
Use lolesports.com or the regional league site. Check:
- Best-of. Bo1/Bo3/Bo5. A 2–0 is a finished Bo3 and an unfinished Bo5.
- Patch. The number on the match or week page. If Worlds has frozen 14.x while solo queue is 14.x+1, your personal win-rate sheet is the wrong patch.
- Region and start time with zone. LCK and LPL morning starts are easy to convert onto the wrong calendar day in the Americas. Keep the source zone.
- Draft format. Standard or Fearless (or whatever the event named). Ban counts have changed across seasons.
Substitutes and ten-man rosters: leagues allow locked substitutes. The “starting five” on a wiki may lag the official sheet. If the league UI still shows a player as TBD, wait.
Baron, dragon, and voidgrub timers are in-game. They are not series rules. Do not quote a “baron steal rate” unless you are citing a named stats provider’s methodology for that patch. This hub does not invent those rates.
International events versus the weekly league
Weekly league play is a standings grind with a familiar patch. MSI and Worlds compress travel, a possible patch freeze, and a different side-selection rule into two weeks. A team that looked clumsy in week three of spring can be a different draft beast on a frozen Worlds patch. Separate those sentences in your notes.
Tier-2 international cups (for example a Challengers invitational) use their own group rules. They are not a mini-Worlds unless the official page says they share a format. Read the group size, Bo1 count, and whether two teams from one region can meet before knockouts.
Side selection, Fearless, and two calendars
Keep a weekly league calendar and a separate international calendar. MSI and Worlds change travel, patch freeze, and sometimes draft rules. A team that looked lost in week two of spring can be a different draft on a frozen Worlds patch. Write “league week” or “international freeze” at the top of the note so you do not mix them.
If the event uses Fearless draft, a champion leaving game one is a series resource, not a player failing to flex. Your preview should list remaining pool depth, not a signature-pick highlight from three patches ago. Side selection as a series prize (winner of game n picks side in game n+1, or similar) must be copied from the rulebook. Do not assume a coin flip every game.
Language streams and co-streams desync. If you are avoiding spoilers, pick one feed. If you are taking draft notes, the official league stream’s draft overlay is the record. A co-stream joke about a pick is not a timestamp.

Cons / limitations
- Patch freeze vs solo queue. Your ranked champion pool on the live patch is a weak guide to a frozen international event.
- Fearless and special drafts break “signature pick” stories. A player’s 200-game champion may be unavailable by game four.
- Region VOD delays and language streams desync. A co-stream can be minutes behind the official English or Korean feed. Mixing them spoils and also mis-times drafts.

Does blue side always get first pick? Usually in standard draft, but read the event. Side selection can be a series prize, not a coin flip every game.

Why did they play five games if one team already had two wins? You were in a Bo5. Confirm series length before calling it over.
